Shy Shiloh: Bringing Shiloh Home

Tales of a shy dog named Shiloh

While it wasn't exactly love at first sight, there was definitely some tugging of the old heartstrings!

Though we had just visited the rescue a few days ago, there was a Facebook announcement that new dogs had been saved and I wanted to meet them. Sure enough, there were two gorgeous golden retrievers in one of the outdoor runs! My husband has always wanted a golden retriever.

A small girl and a bigger boy, both on the shy side. I've always been attracted to reddish goldens, so she immediately caught my eye. And better yet, she caught my husband's eye! Good thing, because we were looking for a dog for him.

This beauty had been named Merida by the rescue, as she was so afraid of everything that she needed a brave name. She was so scared that she refused to walk, so the staff started carrying her everywhere.

What can I say, we fell for her immediately.

Went to visit her again and the adoption coordinator suggesting we foster her first. Brought our dog Waffles down for a meet & greet, then signed the foster papers!

Shy Shiloh keeping a wary eye on us during the car ride home

The ride home was much smoother than we expected. She kept an eye on us during the ride, then surprised us by sticking her head between the front seats!

Shiloh surprised us by sticking her head between the seats during the car ride home

We had to carry her to the backyard when we got home, but then she walked a little on her own. She went and hid behind the hot tub, where she surprised us by chewing off both leashes. So much for leaving the leash on to get her used to it!

poor leashes!

Our dog Waffles has been wonderful with her and after a few sniffs, is giving her lots of room to settle in. There was one bark, but we think Waffles startled her by coming up behind her.

She found a safe spot off the side of the family room and spent most of the day there. Very encouraged when she started exploring on her own! She even came into the family room and laid down on the carpet in front of us. Granted, it was less than 5 minutes, but still encouraging!

No accidents at all, but we did have to carry her out into the yard after dark as it seemed to make her nervous. She walked out in the yard on her own during the day, so the fog & dark had to be why she was so hesitant. Once outside, she went potty like a champ!

Not sure why Shiloh is so timid, anxious, and shy as no one knows her backstory. She's not afraid of us, just very cautious.

Going to show her lots of love in the hopes that she'll come out of her shell and start behaving like a regular one year old. Fingers crossed!

Barielle Island Breeze, Blue Cotton Candy, and Positive ZEN-ergy nail polish

Barielle Island Breeze, Blue Cotton Candy, and Positive ZEN-ergy nail polish

Two coats of Island Breeze, Blue Cotton Candy, and Positive ZEN-ergy polish by Barielle. First time in a long time that I haven't liked a manicure, but just not happy with how these polishes look together. They looked great in the bottle and thought they would make a good combo, but not so much IRL. Oh well....

It's listed on Julep's website as being an iridescent pink grapefruit. I think it's a great summer shade, but might have a little too much pink for me.

Waffles Wednesday: Jealous Big Sis

I think that Waffles is a little jealous of the foster kittens. I still can't let them be in the same room unless the foster kittens are in their cage because Waffles might accidentally hurt them. She just wants to play, but they're still so tiny and I'm afraid someone will get hurt.

If I fits, I sits

How Waffles managed to get into the kitten carrier, much less turn around and lie down, I'll never know! She didn't want to come out either!

My towel!

Waffles has five beds and two blankets of her own, so why she felt the need to claim the kitten's towel as well....well, guess she's a little jealous. It took her over ten minutes to arrange the towel to her satisfaction and get it "just right". It just annoys her when I try to help her arrange her blanket, so I left her to it and grabbed my camera! Silly doggie!

I put this toy in reserve so Waffles has another new toy towards the end of the month, so she hasn't played with this one yet. Seems to be a crinkly toy instead of a squeaky one so not sure how Waffles will like this one. We'll see.

It Girl box

I usually skip each month because I have a ton of unused nail polish, but I finally had enough Jules for a free box and the It Girl this month had fun, summer colors.

A little disappointed that I received Ilsa as my bonus polish as I don't wear dark colors like this, especially dark inky blues. Will try to trade this one, but I don't have much luck with trading lately.

Adventures in Fostering: Introductions

 photo 19b2a6d5-609b-4e9a-8fd5-757dcb1193df.jpg

I was warned not to name them.

That naming the kittens would make it harder for me to give them up.

But how could I not name them? What, I was supposed to call them "hey you" the entire time they were here?

Actually, I wish I had had more time before naming them so I could get to know their personalities better, but the shelter called me for names the Monday after I brought them home. She was updating their records and needed names.

So may I present the foster kitties:

Buster, the only boy in the bunch. He's quickly turning into a lapcat and loves to snuggle! I think he's adorable and will have no trouble finding his furever home!

This is Houdini. She managed to escape the cage several times the first few days and has a tendency to disappear when it's time to go back into the cage at night. She's a clever one!

 photo 028.jpg
This is Tortellini. She loves to play with toys, but also loves to snuggle. This girl plays and she plays hard! She always makes me laugh with her silly antics!

 photo June3020007.jpg
Katniss, the fearless one. She was the first one out of the carrier when I brought the kittens home and loves to explore! She's developing lapcat tendencies along with Buster, but still loves to explore!

Waffles & the kittens
My dog Waffles, saying hello to the kitties.

Still getting to know the kittens, but they're so much fun and so full of love! Will be hard to say goodbye to these cuties, but know they'll have no trouble finding their forever homes.

Sample Challenge 7/5/15

In one of the Facebook groups I belong to, one of the ladies came up with a genius idea:  a sample challenge! The challenge is pretty straightforward, just use three or more of the samples received in various subscription boxes. Simple, right? But so many of us just toss the samples into a drawer and forget about them, so we really needed this!

Sadly, this is just a small portion of my samples.

This week is a pain reliever and 2 makeup remover wipes.

The Samples:

This week's samples

Experience our best face wipes for all skin types. Remove make-up, cleanse and tone in one easy step. Infused with vitamin-rich White Tea, calming Cucumber plus soothing Aloe, pamper yourself with our make-up remover wipes. Thanks to our handy natural facial cleansing towelettes you can give your skin the care it needs no matter where you are.

Advil PM caplets
Advil® PM caplets combine the trusted pain relieving power of Advil® with a gentle sleep aid to help you get a good night’s sleep.

Pond's wet cleansing towelettes
Perfectly clean & fresh in an instant. No other leading towelette is better at removing impurities and gently lifting away makeup than these soft, textured cleansing cloths. Infused with Vitamin E and a Triple Anti-Oxidant complex, they revitalize skin while leaving it perfectly clean and makeup free.

My Thoughts:

While the Burt's Bees towelettes were effective, they weren't as moist as I'm used to and felt a little rough. Overall, I didn't care for these towelettes and would not buy them.

The Advil PM caplets worked, as I seemed to go to sleep quicker than usual that night. The downside is that I felt groggy the next morning and it took me a long time to shake that feeling. I did not like how I felt the next day and will not be using these again.

I really liked the Pond's towelettes and these were my favorite samples from this batch! The towelettes were moist and removed my makeup with no problem. No roughness, but rather the smooth clean feeling I've come to associate with Pond's. Will definitely buy these next time I need cleansing towelettes!

Not a bad start, but I need to dive back in and start using my samples again!

Cucumber Salad Recipe

Cucumber Salad Recipe

We have a small patio garden and are growing cucumbers and tomatoes. Why? Because that's what the garden center had when we went in search of plants and we didn't want to try our hand at watermelon or peppers.

Our crop has been pretty good, but now we had too many cucumbers to just cut them up for green salads. After an online search, I was inspired by a recipe for cucumber salad at The Garden Grazer. With a few tweaks, it's become our new favorite summer salad!

  • 1-2 large cucumbers
  • 1/2 small red onion
  • handful of grape tomatoes
  • 3 TBSP white vinegar
  • 2 TBSP olive oil
  • 1 TSP oregano
  • 1/2 TSP salt
  • honey to taste (I use 3 swirls around the bowl)

  • Cut the cucumbers into thick slices, then halve or quarter each slice. (I like chunky quarters)
  • Thinly slice onion, then separate rings. Cut if pieces are too large.
  • Halve grape tomatoes
  • Add cucumbers, onions, and tomatoes to bowl, set aside.
  • In small bowl, whisk together vinegar, olive oil, oregano, salt, and honey.
  • Add dressing to vegetables, gently mix together.
  • Refrigerate before serving. Best when given an hour to two to marinate.

I've made this salad with one large cucumber and then with 1 1/2 medium size cucumbers and they both turned out great!

While I like long pieces of onion, my family prefers smaller pieces so I started cutting the rings in half or quarters.

I eyeball the tomatoes and keep adding until it looks pleasing to the eye. Not very scientific, but it tastes good!

Adventures in Fostering: The kittens come home

Adventures in Fostering!

After thinking about fostering for awhile, I finally decided to take the plunge when one of the rescues I follow on Facebook sent out an urgent plea. They had over 60 kittens waiting and were in desperate need of foster homes.

I reached out to them last Saturday, spoke to one of their volunteers on Sunday, was vetted on Wednesday, and went to pick up the kittens Thursday morning. The head of the shelter took me back to one of the kitten buildings and let me pick out which litter I wanted. Talk about pressure!

So many kittens to choose from! I made a snap decision to take the oldest bunch since I've never raised a litter before (all of my previous cats were adults). I only need to foster them until they're old enough to be spayed/neutered and can be adopted.

Turns out that my chosen litter had a sad story. Some evil human had left them in a closed storage crate. We've been having a bad heatwave so if someone hadn't discovered them in time, they'd certainly be dead! Who would do such a thing?

Luckily, the kittens were discovered in time! They were given full check-ups by the vet, including their first shots. Poor babies!

Look out! She's behind you! (source)

The shelter gave me several cases of canned food and I had already stocked up on kitty litter and Kitten Chow. Decided to use the Waffles' old cage from her heartworm treatment. She wanted to inspect it once it was set up!

While I've had rescue cats in the past, they've all been adults. I've never raised kittens, so assuming there will be a steep learning curve. And if I have any questions, there's always Google!

So without further ado, let me present my new foster kitties:

WalMart Beauty Boxes - Summer 2015

WalMart Beauty Box - Summer 2015

WalMart has gotten into the beauty box subscription business, offered quarterly. You fill out a short survey and receive a box of beauty items, some full size and some samples. For only $5 per box, I couldn't resist signing up! From what we've seen online, there are two boxes and we're guessing that they're divided by age. I decided to sign up for both boxes, using different email addresses and ages. You can sign up or get more details here if you're interested.

Version 1:

Because this box has a blemish control scrub and One Direction perfume, we're assuming it's the "young" box.

NYC Liquid Lipshine in Rivington Rose
Jergens Natural Glow foil samples
Neutrogena CoolDry Sport Sunscreen Lotion
St. Ives Blemish Control Apricot Scrub
Dove Go Fresh Body Wash in Mandarin & Tiare Flower
Clear Scalp & Hair Therapy Shampoo (expired)
You & I One Direction perfume sample
Nivea Soft Moisturizing Cream

Version 2:

 photo 68ff6552-e48c-49a7-9711-01128f4d286a.jpg
This box has an anti-aging lotion, so we're assuming it's the "old lady" box.

Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick in Gladiolus
Caress Adore Forever scented body wash
Neutrogena CoolDry Sport Sunscreen Lotion
John Frieda Beach Blonde Sea Salt Spray
Clear Scalp & Hair Therapy Shampoo (expired)
Olay Total Effects 7 Anti-Aging eye treatment

The boxes aren't as nice as the first box I received, but they're better than the previous ones and well worth the $5 cost. Not happy that I received two expired shampoos, but then again, I never knew that shampoo could expire. Think this will be the only subscription box I'm going to keep, as monthly boxes result in too many samples and PopSugar is too expensive. Of course, I could change my mind tomorrow and sign up for a dozen more!

Birchbox had a special where you could sign up for your first box for only one dollar, so I decided to get a second box for June. Not impressed with the selection, so will cancel this and go back to only one box per month. I have enough sunscreen and eyeshadow to last a lifetime and don't wear headbands. Very disappointed with the samples, but love the box they came in!
