Becoming the Bionic Woman (or why I'll be offline for awhile)

After two arthroscopic knee surgeries, one of my knees has deteriorated to the point where it will no longer straighten. Standing or walking for any length of time has become difficult. After an injection last fall that got rid of the pain, I finally decided to take the plunge and get a knee replacement.

Tests, tests, and more tests

Of course, before any operation there are the inevitable tests. I had to get x-rays of my leg, a MRI, lab work, and a chest x-ray. Three different locations on three different visits. I had to meet with a GP to confirm my lab work was okay. Another visit, aka another bill. Then a pre-op visit at the hospital where they wanted me to pay for the surgery in advance. I've never had to prepay for surgery before! The woman must have mentioned collection agencies at least four times, so guess people tend to skip out on hospital bills.

aka Terri
The inside of my elbow wasn't good enough for the oxygen test, so they took blood from my wrist. Ouch!

Hair today, gone tomorrow

aka Terri
Since I'm going to be laid up for awhile, I decided to cut my hair. Waist length hair is pretty, but a pain to take care of and I didn't want to worry about it during recovery. Takes forever to wash & dry, so figured short hair would be easier. Twelve inches!

A torture device of my very own!

aka Terri
A very nice lady stopped by the house Sunday afternoon to set me up with a torture device of my very own! I'll have to strap my leg into this thing three times a day, two hours at a time, in order to get my new knee to bend. Oh goodie.

But wait, there's more!

aka Terri
Oh boy! I get a walker too! And a contraption to sit over my real toilet so I don't get stuck. Way to make me feel 1,000 years old!

Protection at all costs!

aka Terri
I'm wearing a knee brace right now. Not for the support, but to protect the skin from any accidental cuts or scraps. Apparently my doctor will not operate if there's even a teeny, tiny little scrap in case of infection. I just want to get it over with now, so knee brace it is!

So anywaaaay

So anyway, I guess this is the first step to becoming the Bionic Woman. I'm going to be very disappointed if my new knee doesn't make that cool gee-gee-gee sound that Jaime Summers knees made!

Please send good vibes and happy thoughts my way!

Deborah Lippmann Rock This Town Trio: Phoenix Rising, Moon Dance, and Chain Reaction

Deborah Lippmann Rock This Town trio - aka Terri
Deborah Lippmann Rock This Town trio. I got this set awhile back, but never tried any of the colors until now. Decided to use all three at once as I couldn't make up my mind which one I wanted to try first!

Phoenix Rising - aka TerriPhoenix Rising - aka Terri
Two coats of Deborah Lippmann's Phoenix Rising. My favorite of the three, it's a gorgeous copper color! Thick enough that I got full coverage with only one coat, I like using two just to be on the safe side.

Deborah Lippmann Moon Dance and Chain Reaction - aka TerriDeborah Lippmann Moon Dance and Chain Reaction - aka Terri
Deborah Lippmann Moon Dance and Chain Reaction. Moon Dance is more on the purple side and Chain Reaction has a bronze tint. Indoors, in poor light, I couldn't see any difference between the two. I tried to get a picture in the sun, but the differences are somewhat subtle unless it's bright direct sunlight.

Mail Call 7/19/14

mail call

Having signed up for so many samples and entered so many contests, decided that I needed a place to share the goodies that have started coming in the mail!

Birchbox socks - aka Terri
I didn't realize that Birchbox sold women's socks! Fell in love with these as soon as I saw them, as they're origami cranes! Love origami cranes!

Birchbox mystery pack - aka Terri
My latest Birchbox Mystery Sample Pack. Disappointed that I received a Yes To Cucumbers facial towelette and foil sample of hair conditioner.

Julep order - aka Terri
My latest order from Julep:  nail polish remover and Bare Face cleansing oil. I emailed customer service as the remover seemed awfully low, but I haven't heard back from them yet.

Julep Glycolic Hand Scrub - aka Terri
Julep Glycolic hand scrub. I bought this using a 50% off coupon and love it!

Enchanted Polish - aka Terri
My first Enchanted Polish! I got lucky and saw the presale notice on Facebook, so was able to order a bottle of May 2014. They were mystery colors, so I decided to go with May as that's my birthday month. Love it! Some people are calling it orange, but I think it's a more coppery color. So excited to finally see what all the fuss is about!

Olay Regenerist - aka Terri
Olay Regenerist moisturizer sample.

Not a great week mail-wise, but so excited that I finally have an Enchanted Polish!

Escape Monthly India - July 2014

Escape Monthly India - aka Terri
Escape Monthly is a monthly subscription service that brings you a taste of a vacation destination, a literal vacation in a box! I found a great deal for this month, but it's normally $49.95 per month. They recently started a mini-box for $24.95, with 4-5 products. Half the size of a regular box, but just as much fun! Think I'm going to switch to the mini-box, as I can't justify that much money for a monthly sub.

This isn't on the info brochure, but was included in the box. Not sure how this fits the Indian theme, so maybe it was a mistake? Love the smell of this one, so may actually keep it!

I was a little nervous when I heard that this month was India, but was excited to see what they would include as I had a blast in India a few years ago. Was hoping for a scarf, but satisfied with what I received as the food items are listed as mild so I may be able to eat them. Next month's box is Paris, and I'm debating if I should switch to the mini-box or the regular one. Decisions, decisions, decisions....

Birchbox July 2014

Birchbox is a monthly beauty subscription where you receive a mix of beauty products (samples and full size). At only $10 per month, it's one of my favorite beauty boxes and a great deal! I received box #28 this month.

Birchbox July 2014 - aka Terri
Birchbox partnered with Women's Health magazine this month! Love the special box, as it's so fun and colorful!

Beauty Protector Protect & Treat Mask - aka Terri
Beauty Protector Protect & Treat Mask.
Developed by stylists, this argan oil treatment restores strength and megashine to hair.
Love the detangler, so looking forward to trying this mask! So happy that I received two jars, as this will give me enough to really sample the product.

Beauty Protector Protect & Treat Mask - aka Terri
Ruffian nail polish in Ambrosia.
This was my pick this month. Birchbox is trying something new and let us pick the shade of either nail polish or lip gloss that we wanted this month. I love nail polish and love all shades of purple, so how could I not pick this one?

LAQA & Co sheer lip lube pencil in Menatour - aka Terri
LAQA & Co sheer lip lube pencil in Menatour.
A high-gloss, semi-sheer lip color that's perfect for summer.
This is a duplicate for me, but I still haven't tried it. The purple is a little scary, but maybe it won't be too bad because it's sheer?

Balance Me Wonder Eye Cream - aka Terri
Balance Me Wonder Eye Cream.
Antiaging multitasker that conquers wrinkles and dark circles at the first signs of aging.
I have enough eye creams to last a lifetime now, and am getting a little paranoid that beauty boxes keep sending me more. Are they trying to tell me something? :p

Real Chemistry Luminous 3-minute Peel - aka Terri
Real Chemistry Luminous 3-minute Peel.
This acid-free peel gently exfoliates for instantly softer, smoother, brighter skin.
Don't think I've ever tried a peel before, so curious to see if it works.

Ruffian nail lacquer remover towelette. - aka Terri

This was a bonus item included in my box this month. Hope it works!

Power Up Challenges - aka Terri
Power Up Challenges
Twelve Power Up Challenges that will inspire you to maximize your workouts, sleep, and everything in between.
This is a cute little booklet with 12 small challenges for the month, ranging from trying a different way to part your hair to getting more sleep, they look like fun! I'm going to try and do all twelve!

One of my better boxes this month! Love that I was able to choose between lip gloss and nail polish this month, and even happier that I could then choose the shade I wanted! I really hope that Birchbox decides to keep this feature as it makes the box special. Although I don't need more eye cream, I'm happy with the rest of my box.

Please leave me a link if you received a Birchbox this month, as I'd love to see what you got!

Acure Party With A Purpose

Acure Party With A Purpose - aka Terri
I recently signed up for a house party with Acure. While I'm grateful to receive anything and eager to try their products, I have to admit that I'm a little disappointed after seeing the party packs that earlier hosts received. I'm guessing that they simply weren't prepared for the response they received and had to scale back on their samples, but how I'm supposed to have a party with this? I like my friends, but not enough to shower with them! lol

Here's what was included in my party pack:

These were all full size and worth well over $70, so a very generous pack! We already tried the snacks, but I haven't tried any of the Acure products yet as I'm waiting to hear back from them if it's okay to do a review instead of a house party.

The Peeled Snacks were a mix of dried mango, pineapple, and banana. Not my favorite dried fruit, but I do like that they are organic and have no added oil, sugar, or preservatives.

Angie's Sweet & Spicy Kettle Corn popcorn was too spicy for my family and we couldn't finish it. Disappointing, as kettle corn is our favorite!

Anyone else receive the Acure party kit? What did you get? And were you able to have an actual party? Please let me know, as I'm at a loss!

L'oreal Pop the Bubbles nail polish

Loreal Pop the Bubbles nail polish - aka Terri
L'oreal Pop the Bubbles nail polish. I used two coats because that's what I'm used to, but there was full coverage after only one coat. Love this color! The texture is rough, but oh so sparkly!

Sample Challenge #4

In one of the Facebook groups I belong to, one of the ladies came up with a genius idea:  a sample challenge! The challenge is pretty straightforward, just use three or more of the samples received in various subscription boxes. Simple, right? But so many of us just toss the samples into a drawer and forget about them, so we really needed this!

Sample Challenge #4 - akaTerri
Sadly, this isn't even all of them.

Keeping it random, this week I wound up with 2 hand soaps, 1 shampoo, 1 conditioner, and a facial towelette.

Sample Challenge #4 - aka Terri

The Samples:

This is sunshine, sharply sectioned and freshly squeezed. The invigoration of citrus finds its zest, with vetiver green. Find fresh purpose & clearest intentions.

Caldrea Basil Blue Sage hand soap
A sprig of spring. Refinde yet relaxed, this bouquet tidies your affairs with the effortless Provencal chic of its namesakes - plus rosemary, spearmint and cinnamon leaf.

Dove Oxygen Moisture shampoo
Oxygen Moisture Shampoo is made with Oxyfusion Technology, a new generation of moisture. With lightweight, oxygen-fused conditioning ingredients, the formula rapidly disperses on your hair. It gently cleanses & moisturizes, breathing life into fine, flat hair.

Dove Oxygen Moisture conditioner
Oxygen Moisture Conditioner is made with Oxyfusion Technology, a new generation of moisture. With lightweight, oxygen-fused conditioning ingredients, the formula rapidly disperses on your hair. It delicately smoothes hair without weighing it down.

Yes To Cucumbers Hypoallergenic Facial Wipes gently remove dirt, sweat and makeup (eye makeup too!) without the need to rinse. Whether you're out and about, going for a run, or having a late night, these wipes make it a snap to refresh on-the-go. Packed with green superfoods these all-natural, biodegradable wipes naturally exfoliate, detoxify, and rejuvenate all-in-one. Stay gorgeous, and go from zero to clean in seconds!

My Thoughts:

The Rosewater Caldrea hand soap remains my favorite scent of the line. The Mandarin scent smelled like mandarin oranges and had a pleasing citrus scent, but I didn't care for the Basil Blue Sage at all. Too herb-y and almost medicinal.

The Dove shampoo and conditioner had a nice scent. The shampoo lathered up nicely and the conditioner was easy to wash out, but I didn't notice any significant improvement in my hair. They were very nice sizes for a sample and I got about one week's use out of them.

I have tried several different Yes To towelettes and wasn't impressed with the Cucumber Soothing towelette. It didn't seem to remove much makeup and I didn't feel any exfoliating at all. Won't be buying this one, as I prefer their other versions.

Thanks again to Jill for putting this challenge together! I'm finally making a dent in my sample piles! While none of these were winners this week, at least I've tried some new products.

PashBox Scarf Subscription Box - July 2014

PashBox is a subscription service that I recently discovered, with subs for scarves, sunglasses, or a combination of the two. I love scarves, so was excited to sign up for their scarf sub! Normally $22 per month, I had a discount code so it was only $16 for my first month.

Sad to discover that as of July 16, they will no longer offer a monthly scarf subscription and will now be a quarterly fashion accessories/beauty box. I love scarves and thought this was a unique idea, so sad that they decided to go the Glossybox/PopSugar route.

Infinity scarf #1: a beautiful sheer green & brown pattern. The tag says "Do everything in love" but there's no other info. It's like an animal print and very pretty.

Infinity scarf #2: a lovely white scarf with red and black markings. This one also has the "Do everything in love" tag.

Bonus items! An aloe vera face mask and Skinny Cow chocolate!

While I prefer regular scarves to infinity scarves, these are both long enough that I think I can pull them off. And I wasn't expecting the two bonus items! What a nice surprise! Sad that I finally found a unique sub box that I love, only to have it reinvent itself. Well, at least I got one month's worth of beautiful scarves!
