The heartworm jouney begins...

 photo 002.jpg

When we adopted Waffles from the shelter six months ago, we were told upfront that she was heartworm positive. The shelter workers said that she was a low positive and made it seem like it was no big deal, that we could just give her monthly preventative and it would clear up in a few months. Never having dealt with heartworm before, we believed them. We feel duped, because it is a big deal.

After six months on preventative, she's still heartworm positive and her lungs don't look good. The vet left it up to us, but made it clear that it could take quite awhile for the adult heartworms to die with only the preventative, and that they could do more damage over time. We decided to go ahead with the intensive treatment because we've already had to take her to the Pet ER twice because of respiratory distress. We almost lost her once and don't want to risk that happening again.

Our first appointment was February 1st to discuss the treatment with our vet. Waffles does not like the vet's office now, probably because she remembers getting a fluid shot from her last respiratory emergency. She starts trembling and crying as soon as we walk through the front door. I'm not sure how, but she somehow wound up on my lap as we were sitting in the waiting room. It's heartbreaking.

Started her on antibiotics as soon as we came home from the visit, then started her on a second pill Monday morning. Also did a Heartguard Plus treatment. The vet advised we wait until Monday morning in case she had a bad reaction.

The plan was for one month on the pills to weaken the heartworms, then get her first shot. We decided to get her used to not being able to run in the yard by keeping her on a leash every time we took her outside. Also bought a larger crate for the living room, just in case she got too active and we had to confine her.

The month went better than expected, probably because we weren't sure what to expect. She threw up three times, always in the middle of the night. It was a thin, yellowish bile each time. The vet said that wasn't anything to panic about and just keep an eye on her. Easier said than done.

One month down, two to go....

Mail Call

mail call

Having signed up for so many samples and entered so many contests, decided that I needed a place to share the goodies that have started coming in the mail!

My first successful PinchMe order! The samples go really fast, and this is the only time I've been able to snag anything. Suave cocoa butter and shea body lotion and Maxwell House International Cafe french vanilla mix. Love body lotion, and DH enjoyed the latte!

Outback giftcard
I won a $50 Outback giftcard on Twitter! I had to tweet them a bad date experience, and actually won! I used a bad triple date from when I was a teenager: jerk boys had no plans so we all hung out in a parking lot until the girls complained about the cold. We finally went into a restaurant, but no one had any money so we all had to split drinks. Not sure what they were thinking, but needless to say there were no second dates!

MAC zoom lash
MAC zoom lash. This is a teeny, tiny sample, which is a little surprising as I expected something larger from MAC.

L'eau de Cristal perfume sample
I was missing this L'eau de Cristal perfume sample from my last Birchbox, but customer service was awesome and immediately sent me a replacement!

Not a bad week for samples!

Ipsy - February 2014

Ipsy is a beauty subscription box where you receive a Glam Bag full of deluxe samples and full-sized beauty products every month. Getting a different makeup bag every month seems to be popular with subscribers, but I'm still not sure what I'm going to do with all these different bags. It's only $10 a month, so overall it's a good deal if you'd like to try products you normally wouldn't buy. I still prefer Birchbox as I wind up using more of their samples, but Ipsy is a fun alternative!

Love seeing that pink padded envelope in the mailbox!

February Ipsy goodies
My February goodies!

Pop Beauty Plump Pout Mini
Pop Beauty Plump Pout Mini in Fuchsia Freesia. Just an okay color for my complexion, and it tingled when first applied. Didn't notice much plumping action, but the staying power wasn't bad. Some people have complained about the smell, but I don't think it smells that bad.
This plumping pout perfector combines the high-shine of a lacquered gloss with the long wear of a stain and is packed full of lip-plumping peptides and avocado and jojoba oils. Lightweight, creamy texture immediately merges with lips & delivers intense glossy color for an extremely long-lasting finish!

J.Cat Beauty Eyelashes & Eyelash Glue
J.Cat Beauty Eyelashes & Eyelash Glue. Do people really wear false eyelashes? I can barely apply mascara without poking my eye, so wouldn't want these anywhere near my eyeballs! Plus, I've always thought that false eyelashes are kind of silly. No thank you, Ipsy!
Cause a ruckus as you bat your voluminous faux eyelashes! Each includes an individual eyelash adhesive for endurance through a night on the town!

Zoya nail polish in Dot
Zoya nail polish in Dot. I'm not a big fan of pink nail polish, so will be putting this on my trade board. Wish I had received the other color, as I love purples!
This season's Zoya Nail polish are full of pure pigment, intense color and modern complexity that are a perfect transition into Spring.

Eyetini Cordial Cream Shadow in Violette
Tini Beauty Eyetini Cordial Cream Shadow in Violette (an Ipsy exclusive). Not sure about this one, as purple seems an odd choice for someone with blue eyes. Does Ipsy even look at our beauty profiles?
Say goodbye to creasing and fading with Eyetini Eye Cordial Shadow Tint & Base. Eye Cordial's revolutionary formula glides on beguiling creamy color and sets to a transfer-resistant finish that doubles as a wear-extending base under powder shadow.

skyn Iceland Fresh Start Mask with Ice Age Mud
skyn Iceland Fresh Start Mask with Ice Age Mud. Am excited to try this one, as mud masks are supposed to be really good for your skin. Fingers crossed!
This 10-minute weekly treatment polishes and re-texturizes skin to reveal a luminous, youthful translucence for a fresh start. This two phase detoxing and brightening mask is an anti-aging, dullness-diminishing super power.

Ipsy bag
This month's Ipsy bag. A little on the boring side, but at least it doesn't smell like last month's bag!

Did you receive Ipsy this month? How did you like it? I'm on the fence about whether or not I'll cancel, so will wait and see what March brings.

It's a Greta Garbo kinda day...

Have never seen Waffles bury herself under her blanket like this before, but I've had those days too so we left her alone.

I want to be left alone. ~Greta Garbo

Zoya Lotus nail polish

Zoya Lotus

Two coats of Zoya Lotus

Zoya Lotus

Sad to say that it chipped within 24 hours. Really should have used 3 coats as while it looks okay indoors, it looks pretty streaky outside in direct sun.

Glossybox - January 2014

Glossybox is a monthly subscription service that is available by the month ($21), or you can sign up for 3,6,or 12 month plans. Once you select a plan, you fill out your beauty profile, sit back and wait for your box filled with 5-6 luxury-sized samples! A little pricey for my tastes, but you do get some very nice things!

The box is nice and sturdy, and your items come wrapped in pretty black tissue paper tied up with a nice pink ribbon. Presentation is important, so well done Glossybox!

First look at my January goodies!

Soothe and strengthen dry skin with Vichy's aqualia thermal rich cream. This paraben-free formula melts easily into skin and locks in moisture for 48-hour lasting hydration. Formulated with mineral-rich Vichy Thermal Water and hyaluronic acid.

Bellapierre mineral blush
Bellapierre mineral blush.
This creamy super sheer all mineral blush creates a soft, radiant glow for fresh-faced rosy cheeks. Recommended by make-up artists and dermatologists, it is suitable for all skin types and conditions, from oily skin to dry, mature types and even the most sensitive.

While these products are all very nice, I wouldn't have purchased any of these on my own and they're not really of much interest to me. I enjoy receiving new things to try, which is why I like subscription boxes so much, but this is too much money for me to be disappointed month after month. I got a good deal on a 3 month subscription through Living Social, but will not be renewing it.

Birchbox Review - February 2014

Birchbox is a monthly beauty subscription where you receive a mix of beauty products (samples and full size). At only $10 per month, it's one of my favorite beauty boxes and a great deal! I received Box #3 this month.

The info card, front & back. The theme this month is Step And Repeat. Something to do with awards season and posing on the red carpet, but I don't really get the reference.

If you miss spending your summer days with nothing but time to kill and a packet of Pop Rocks, then you’ll be happy to find these Effervescent Breath Crystals, which attack halitosis with the ferocity of that sweet, crackling candy.

According to my info card, I was supposed to receive a sample of Joan Vass L'eau de Cristal perfume, but it was missing from my box. I've emailed customer service, so hopefully they'll be able to send me some!

The pore refiner and hair oil are going on my swap list, but looking forward to trying the nail polish! Did you receive Birchbox this month? What did you think? I thought it was an okay box, but disappointed at the missing perfume.

Mail Call (9)

mail call

Having signed up for so many samples and entered so many contests, decided that I needed a place to share the goodies that have started coming in the mail!

 photo yogi010.jpg
Received two samples of Yogi tea, Refreshing Mint and Vanilla Spice. Haven't tried them yet, but they smell good!

 photo vitamin009.jpg
Centrum flavor burst adult chews multivitamin. These were really good, and make me want to start taking vitamins again! The shape and size of Skittles, the recommended daily serving is four, but I only received two chews in the packet. Strange, but still tasty!

 photo katieperry011.jpg
Killer Queen perfume sample by Katy Perry. I love Katy Perry, so looking forward to trying her latest perfume!

 photo suave006.jpg
I've always wanted to try dry shampoo but never seem to get any in my various beauty boxes, so was happy to see this offered via Amazon Vine! Suave Moroccan Infusion Dry Shampoo. Tried it once and it didn't really do anything. I've had better results with baby powder, but will give it another try.

Un-birthday gift

Finally received the last gift from one of my Facebook un-birthday groups.
My month was November. It is now February. Uh-huh.

 photo 003.jpg
I've never heard of Different Dimension nail polish, but I really like the two shades received! And the Color Me Monthly polish is gorgeous! Was sad when it chipped, as the shade is really pretty.

 photo 002.jpg
The infinity scarf and earrings are handmade, and there are three gold bracelets.

A nice gift. I just wish I had received it in November instead of having to keep reminding her. Really took the fun out of everything for me. I still haven't received everything from my other swap. Needless to say, won't be doing any more Facebook swaps!
